“Sit down, sit down. Make yaself at home. Y’all came to smoke, right?” Kevin asked, but didn’t wait on a reply. “One for you, one for you, aaaand one for you.” He handed each of the girls a cigar, then removed a mason jar filled with light green buds from a nearby coat closet. He was stunting and it was obvious. The girls were far from impressed with his mediocre performance. Clearly he had no idea who they were, or what they had come for.

“Well, look, Kev,” Shantanelle began. “Since errybody got they own cigar, ain’t no need to een pass. I mean, what would be the point? Ain’t nuttin to test but who roll the best. Shit, we smoking the same weed. Might as well gone and face it, ya know?”

“Anything ya heart desires.” Kevin took a bow.

Shantanelle peeked over at Tay and gave her a subtle nod. She wanted acceptance from Tay and she wanted her to be proud that she was thinking on her feet. No need to have a blunt in the house with their DNA on it. Corrine, on the other hand, had already emptied the contents of her cigar into an ashtray on the coffee table. She couldn’t fathom how Shantanelle and Tay were being so jovial while they were planning to kill that man. She needed something to smoke, or drink; anything that would calm her restless nerves. Kevin walked around and placed a gram of the country wood in each of their hands and they silently broke the buds down. Once everyone was convinced their cigars had been sealed to perfection, Corrine sparked fire to the end of hers and passed her lighter around to the others. It circled completely before returning to its rightful owner. As they smoked and made nice, Tay received a text that dampened her mood.

No word from u yet? Lemme kno if u cant…

Tay stared at the phone for a moment or two, contemplating her response. I can…wait for it… she replied to the text. “Kev, we really appreciate your hospitality, but we really need to get Corrine home. You know she gotta start rattlin some pots for tomorrow. Can we at least pay you for the weed we smoked?” Tay asked while rummaging through her purse.

“Nooo! You don’t owe me a single thing, pretty lady. Your company was payment enough. Y’all alright with me and if y’all ain’t too busy, maybe we can get up tomorrow?”

“Sounds like a plan to me,” Shantanelle agreed.

“I’m in,” Corrine added.

“Perfect, looks like we got a date. Y’all can keep whatever ya didn’t roll or smoke, it’s all love here,” Kevin advised his company, then rose to his feet to see them out.

The girls walked out of the house the same way they walked in, careful not to touch anything and in a single file line. Corrine and Shantanelle made their way to the car while Tay stayed behind and had a few private words with Kevin. “It really was nice meeting you.
